Year 4 - 8 Swimming Sports

After a false start on Monday (cold weather) yesterday came out a stunner. The pool was glistening, the sun was shining, parents were arriving and everyone was excited!

Splash! They were away. Zone races, with a break of kickboard lengths in between. The competition was fierce, regardless and it was amazing to see the determination of so many children to get to the end.

The length races (not for zones) was as exciting and the Year 4's couldn't wait to get into the water. Parents cheered and clapped and everyone was able to complete their race well. Kai pai everyone!

Finally the width races. These are our non-competitive/give-it-a-go races. But clearly a couple of Year 5 girls had missed that memo and were determined to be the winners of the non-competitive race. Good on ya girls! Maybe we'll see these lovelies in the length races next year.

We are Sailing!

Today can be summed up in one word ... sensational!

The children that went sailing with us today showed everyone what great YMS heroes they are. They really did us proud with both their behaviour and attitude and their willingness to take a risk trying something new. We would have preferred to have a little more wind to help us move, but the children did a great job anyway.

These are only a few of the photos that were taken today. The children will be posting photos of themselves throughout today on their learning blogs on Friday.

What a Fantastic Week!

It really has been another fantastic week. The children are really settling down well and meeting our expectations in regards to positive work ethics and behaviour.

Thank you to all who came to see us on Tuesday night at the Meet the Teacher Event. We really appreciate you taking the time to come in and see how our Learning Hub will be operating this year. We are really happy to have you on board. After the discussions we had with you that evening, we have made the following changes. As of Monday, children who bring mobile phones to school with them, will hand them to us at the start of the day and it will be returned to them at 3pm. We will store them securely and carefully.

This week our Year 7s and 8s had their first Technology Session at Lincoln Primary. Although the bus failed to arrive to pick them up, we had a Plan B up our sleeves and many thanks go to Mrs Spragg, Mrs Manton and Mr Robertson for ferrying them there. We had a lovely email from Lincoln about how fantastic our children were and how they were living up to our HERO values. We are super proud of them.

In other news this week, we created structures out of spaghetti and marshmallows, with the goal being to see who could build the tallest structure that could support a kinder egg for at least 30 seconds. They worked collaboratively in groups to design and then make their structure. There was a varied amount of success with this activity, with many not prepared to accept defeat and coming up with new plans and ideas based on what they had learnt from their first attempt. We have some real budding designers on our hands.

Next week is shaping up to be another full week with exciting opportunities planned alongside the finishing of our assessments. We are really looking forward to our Sailing taster day on Wednesday. Swimming lessons happen again next week also.

Week One - Done!

What a great first (half) week! We have had a great time getting to know the students over the past three days and we can already see how motivated they are to learn and be self-managers.

We have spent the past few days revisiting our Hero Values (Healthy Individuals, Enthusiastic Learners, Responsible Citizens & Open-minded Explorers), talking about what it means to be respectful and working on how to be ‘Rimu’ in our classroom (think moving around the space, voice level etc).

Our other learning has been using our classroom site to work on a choice of activities around Reading, Writing and Mathematics. The students will be sharing their completed work next week. We have found it really interesting to watch the students manage themselves and the work during this time. And the work they are producing is really impressive. And on top of that we have even managed our first individual blog post! Wahoo!!!

Mrs Taylor and Mrs Spragg forgot to take some photos of all this amazing learning but we have managed to get some individual pictures so here they are our Rimu stars!
