What a Week! - We are definitely Hooked on Books in Rimu!

Only 1 of the 3 boxes held our book. We had to pick which one it was based on the sound of the box being shaken. We all picked box B but there wasn't a book in there. Then we chose box A and BINGO, our book of the day was revealed, The Person Controller by David Baddiel.
Check out our finished illustrations for the book The First Hippo in Space by David Walliams. We used the technique Batik to create our illustrations and we have been working on them for 3 days. We are excited to share the final results.
We have had an amazing week, and been introduced to some new books and authors. Can't wait to do this all over again next term.

Hooked on Books - Day 5

When we opened the box yesterday, we were surprised with a note.
So, off on a treasure hunt we went. Nikoli was the lucky person to have found our book, Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. This is a powerful book about a girl who has hidden the fact that she struggles to read.
On arriving at school today, we've found 3 identical boxes. What could this mean?

Hooked on Books - Day 4

Yesterday we became illustrators. The book we were illustrating was The First Hippo on the Moon by David Walliams. That's why we couldn't open the box till 2.45pm, as Mrs Spragg and Mrs Taylor wanted us to think about our own ideas for the story without being influenced by the pictures in the book.
We used batik to create our illustrations. This is a technique where we use a paste that will act as a barrier to paint, to outline our drawings.

Once we have then painted them and the paint has dried, we pick off the paste leaving behind our master pieces. We have had to let our flour and water paste dry overnight so today we will paint them. Should be lots of fun!
So it's Day 4 of Hooked on Books Week and the box is just waiting for someone to open it. We know it doesn't have chocolate inside, we know it's a book but the question is which book? Our class is buzzing with excitement and we can't wait to find out!

Hooked on Books - Day 3

Yesterday, after a game of Pass the Parcel, where we unwrapped layer ...
after layer ...

after layer of paper,

We finally discovered our new book, Space and Beyond (A Choose Your Own Adventure Book) by R.A. Montgomery. We were soon lost in our own Space Adventures.

We wonder what we will find today! Arriving at school we found our gift but it had a note attached ...

We've got a link to a jigsaw puzzle though. Can't wait to find out what we are doing and of course what is in the box today.

We were on TV!

You may remember that last term What Now came to our school to film our class playing
Ki-O-Rahi. Well, finally the piece was edited and it aired on What Now over the weekend. We had a lovely email from What Now thanking us for our enthusiasm and professionalism throughout the filming experience. We had a lot of fun and had been looking forward to seeing the finished video. Check it out! We think it's spectacular.

A New Day, A New Gift! - Hooked on Books Day 2

A new day, a new present. We loved what we received yesterday and are excited to see what fantastic book we will unwrap today.

What was in the box?

Sooooooooo, what was in the box?

Zack was eager to find out ...

Was it chocolate?

No, it was the book The Honest Truth by Dan Geminhart.

This week is our Hooked on Books week. Everyday we will get a new book for our class library and our lessons for that day will be based on that book. So exciting!!!! We can't wait to see what our new book will be tomorrow.

What's in the box?

Excitement is in the air at the start of this week. Why? I wonder if it's got something to do with what's inside this box? What could it mean? Stay tuned to find out ...

Cross Country

The children did a fantastic job at running in our cross country race today. The Year 7 and 8 children ran 3.1 kilometres and the Year 5 and 6 children ran 2 kilometres. There were some very tired children at the end of today. Mrs Spragg and Mrs Taylor are really proud of our efforts and determination.

It's Pie-Jama Day!

Thanks to our fantastic PTA for organising today. For a gold coin donation, children were able to come to school today in their pyjamas and they could purchase a delicious pie to eat at lunch time. All the children agreed that it was a great idea, so have given Pie-Jama day a big thumbs up.

Who or what was in Rimu today?

Can you guess who our visitor was from these clues?

I am a mammal who has a pointed snout. There are 30 known species of me.
I have a long hairless tail that can grow as long as my body.
I use my whiskers to  sense changes in temperature and to help feel the surface I am
walking along. As I have so many predators, I usually only live for about six months
in the wild, however in a lab or as a pet, I can live for up to two years. Some people call
me pests or rodents but I am small and wouldn't hurt a human. Who am I?

Have a go at writing your own clues for a different animal so that we can try to guess what you are describing.

You've Got the Power 2018 Anti-Bullying Competition

Hey Rimu,

This is the competition the Elgregoe mentioned. All you have to do is design an Anti-Bullying Poster or Poem that you think could help make a difference in schools.
Prizes Include: A Mega Magic Box (value $100)
                         A Trustpower Prize Pack
                         $1000 cash for your school

Have fun creating your poems, posters or both and then give them to Mrs Spragg or Mrs Taylor to send them away. You all have some fabulous ideas for this and we can't wait to see the finished items.

Elgregoe the Magician visited our school today to not only share his fantastic magic tricks with us but to reinforce the lesson of helping hands. At Yaldhurst we show these five really important words through our actions, thoughts and words. We are Respectful, Helpful, Trustworthy, Responsible and Caring. Through these 5 things we ensure that we look after each other and that everyone feels safe and happy while they are at school.

Some of our children were able to help him with his magic tricks. Thank you so much for sharing your words of wisdom with us. We will remember to use our WIT! (W = Walk Away, I = Ignore, T = Tell an Adult, S = Stop)
